Who Watches Live Online TV

One of the many online live streaming sites is Sling TV (operated by Dish). Sling TV offers you a number of different packages, similar to cable based products, and dependent on how much you are willing to pay. When you examine the data on the primary age groups that use this service, and I used a study from “Statista”, it shows the share of people who have a Sling TV subscription in the United States. Interestingly, the primary age groups that use Sling TV are 18-29 years old and 30-44. Usually streaming services are primarily used by 18-29 year olds, however, the data clearly shows that live streaming services capture the 30-44 range as well.

I believe this is based on the fact that cable TV tends to be popular with older age groups possibly because this is what they are used to. Research by Nominet in the UK supports this thesis, with their extensive research in April 2017 showing that as adults age, their ability with technology reduces. While 64% of Millenials consider themselves “digitally savvy”, that number drops to 23% among Baby Boomers, and 15% among the Pre-War generation.

At present, in 2019, Sling TV has 2.69 million subscribers, YouTube TV has 1 million subscribers, Hulu Plus and AT&T TV Now (formerly Direct TV Now) have 1.5 million subscribers each. (https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/10/29/3-reasons-sony-wants-to-sell-playstation-vue.aspx)

Each service differs in a number of ways in the hope that it helps draw in many more customers.  For example, YouTube TV allows local channels to be viewed through the service and this is therefore very popular with a lot of sports fans who are keen to watch their local teams via the service.
