Over the past decade regular cable packages have been on the decline as people switch due to high prices and channel bundles. Cable companies used to be able to put their prices quite high and sell packages in bundles to overcharge the consumer for content. However, as time has progressed and film and TV have gradually moved online the cable companies have found they have new ground to cover. Many people have started to “cut the cord” and switch to online streaming services such as “Hulu” and “Netflix” or even illegal alternatives. The cable companies are scared as the providers of the content have started going direct to these streaming companies to get more money in return.
In 2019, 44% of American households subscribe to a cable service, with a million having canceled their cable service in the previous 12 months. A 2017 study showed that 61% of young adults in the US mostly used streaming services.
